Legal Tender Notes of the $50 denomination are a scarce sight regardless of signature combination even for those issued under the Lyons - Roberts signature combination which records the highest number of total survivors. Yet that figure is arguably deceptive as relatively few are offered at auction compared to that population as we have only offered a few examples in recent years representative of this specific signature combination including an example graded Choice About Uncirculated 58 by PMG which sold in our August 2024 Global Showcase Auction (Lot 21110) for $15,600. Even though this specimen offers more overt evidence of circulation consistent with the grade assigned, the attractive qualities endemic to this piece are hard to dispute and disregard. Both the portrait of Benjamin Franklin at left adapted from the Duplessis portrait and the Amazonian depiction of America at right offer a crisp degree of detail reflective of the uncommon eye appeal emphasized by this piece for the grade assigned while the green hues on the verso emphasize a superb gradient of color bound to captivate both bidders and onlookers when this note finally crosses the auction block.
