Italy from the Alps to Mount Etna Translated by Frances Eleanor Trollope Edited by Thomas Adolphus Trollope London, Chapman and Hall, Limited Large-format, richly illustrated English-language travel work about Italy, published toward the end of the 19th century. The work comprises travel descriptions by Karl Stieler, Eduard Paulus, and Woldemar Kaden. It guides the reader from the Alps through the historic cities and landscapes of Northern and Central Italy to Southern Italy and Mount Etna in Sicily. In addition to detailed descriptions of the Italian landscapes and sights, the book provides a vivid impression of architecture, art, history, religion, and everyday life in 19th-century Italy. Particularly notable is the extensive illustration. According to the title page, the work contains over 100 full-page and 300 smaller illustrations. The numerous detailed wood engravings show, among other things, historic city views, churches, monasteries, landscapes, rural scenes, and depictions of the Italian population. The illustrated images include, among others, views of the Italian Riviera, religious processions, and scenes from Olevano, a place popular among European artists in the 19th century. The book has a decorative red original linen binding with a gilt title and ornamental gold embossing on the front cover. Bibliographic details Authors: Karl Stieler, Eduard Paulus, and Woldemar Kaden Translation: Frances Eleanor Trollope Editor: Thomas Adolphus Trollope Publisher: Chapman and Hall, Limited, London Year of publication: 1890 Language: English Extent: 468 numbered pages plus preliminaries and illustrations Binding: Red original linen binding with gold embossing Illustration: According to the title page over 100 full-page and 300 smaller wood engravings Condition Age- and use-related condition. The red original binding shows noticeable wear, stains, and signs of use. The corners and edges are partly bumped and worn. The binding is notably loosened at the junction between the book block and the cover and partially damaged in places. The book block is no longer securely attached to the inside cover in the area of the endpapers. The book should therefore be handled with care. The pages show clear foxing and age-related discoloration in places, especially on the endpapers and in the rear part of the book. The depicted wood engravings are mostly well preserved and remain clearly legible with detailed appearance. The work extends to the last numbered page 468 with the printed closing remark “The End.” A complete collation of all illustrations has not been carried out. The photographs show the actual condition of the offered copy and are part of the description.
