Francesco Trombadori (1886-1961) - Piccolo paesaggio siciliano

Oil painting on a wooden panel by Francesco Trombadori Oil on panel, 13x18 cm, signed bottom right. Wonderful frame in gold leaf and canvas (included in the price). First of four children (his father Antonino was a bookseller from Syracuse), in his hometown he attended technical school, taking an interest in books and especially painting, drawn to Caravaggio's Burial of Saint Lucy, the masterwork kept in the city. He moved from Sicily to Rome in 1907, where he studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts and the life-drawing school, under Giuseppe Cellini. In 1911 he held his first solo exhibition in Syracuse, in the foyer of the Municipal Theatre. Following Rome’s cultural milieu, he produced painting largely linked to Enrico Lionne’s divisionism; in 1914 he exhibited his works at the II International Exhibition of the “Secessione Romana,” signing as “Franz Trombadori d’Ortigia”; he illustrated, with six drawings, Ermanno Amicucci’s little volume Piccolo mondo dannunziano, under the pseudonym “Franz d’Ortigia.” In 1915 he went to World War I, where he was wounded; after the war, back in Rome, he produced a series of innovative portraits called photodynamics. He came into contact with the group of Valori Plastici. In 1919 he participated in the XC Exhibition of the Society of the “Amatori e Cultori” of Rome. A frequent patron of Caffè Aragno, between 1922 and 1924 he became friends with Giorgio de Chirico, Riccardo Francalancia, Carlo Socrate and Antonio Donghi, among others. From 1924 Trombadori appeared very often at the Venice Biennale. During the final period of World War II, Trombadori was arrested by the Koch gang, interrogated to extract information about his son Antonello, pursued by the SS. A brother, Giuseppe Trombatore, an antifascist, died young as a result of the persecution imposed by fascism. Also notable is Trombadori’s activity as a militant critic; he wrote, among other things, reviews for magazines and newspapers such as Circoli, L’Epoca, L’Opinione, Il Giornale d’Italia, Gente Nostra, Il Piccolo, Il Mattino. In the 1950s he would occasionally return to Sicily. In 1960 he was invited to the “11th edition of the Avezzano prize – national survey of the Figurative Arts” in Avezzano (AQ), alongside R. Brindisi, S. Cavallo, G. Ceracchini, V. Ciardo, E. Fantuzzi, C. Levi, G. Omiccioli, M. Rosa, G. Strachota, A. Vangelli and others.[2] He died in Rome, in his own studio, in 1961, a few months after his last solo show. He is buried in Verano Cemetery. In Rome, in the Villa Borghese area, near Villa Strohl-Fern (currently owned by the French state and home to the Lycée Chateaubriand of Rome) one can visit the studio that the painter, like other artists, had set up in this spacious green space; today it is among the few artist studios protected by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Environment.
