The long brushstrokes in the hair contrast with the thinner paint layers in the face and the dark background. In the blue tablecloth, pink traces of the underlying surface and previous brush movements have remained visible. The lipstick is painted firmer and sharper, making her stand out as a small, bright object. Hang the work preferably in a quiet place where you can view it both from a distance and up close. Soft light that falls obliquely across the surface makes the layering in the face, hair and table most visible. Cool daylight intensifies the blues and purples; with warmer light the blonde hair, the skin, and the golden casing of the lipstick become more pronounced. Avoid direct sunlight. Still Pretty is about the thin boundary between beauty and judgment. A face lies almost as an object on the table: vulnerable, observed and reduced to appearance. I enjoy making portraits of young men and adolescents because there is something special visible in that life phase: a vulnerability that has not yet hardened by the world. Their faces and bodies carry an indeterminacy in themselves – they are not fully formed yet, but full of promise and possibilities. What matters to me is exactly that in-between moment: no longer a child, not yet a man. In that transition lies a beauty I want to capture, the openness of what can still be becoming and the fragile awareness that this stage lasts only briefly.
