Frank - Conoscere, e Scegliere il Medico - 1802

GUIDE TO THE IDEAL DOCTOR – ETHICS, COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT Interesting and uncommon manual expressly intended for non-doctors, aimed at providing practical criteria to recognize the competence, character and conduct of a good doctor. The author, Giuseppe Frank, chief physician at the Vienna General Hospital and former extraordinary professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pavia, proposes a true ante litteram professional evaluation code, based not only on scientific training but also on moral qualities, prudence, experience and the doctor–patient relationship. The Italian edition, translated from German with notes by the translator, was published in Venice in 1802 by Modesto Fenzo. A work of particular interest for the history of medicine, medical ethics and the doctor–patient relationship. REASONS FOR COLLECTING / WHY TO BUY DEONTOLOGY ANTE LITTERAM – One of the central themes is the definition of the moral and professional qualities that distinguish a good doctor. FOR NON-MEDICS – Text conceived for the general public, a rare example of health education and patient guidance at the beginning of the nineteenth century. NOTABLE AUTHOR – Giuseppe Frank belonged to one of the most important medical families in the Austro-German area and carried out clinical and academic activity in Vienna and Pavia. VENETIAN EDITION OF 1802 – An interesting contemporary Italian translation, enriched by translator’s annotations and printed in an elegant pocketed format. MARKET VALUE For a complete copy, in an era binding or slightly later, with the text intact and overall good condition, the commercial value can be placed indicatively in the €200–300 range. FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR Guida ossia istruzione per ben conoscere, e scegliere il medico. Venezia, presso Modesto Fenzo, 1802. Giuseppe Frank. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE The work is set in the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment climate in which European medicine sought to define itself as a regulated profession not only by technical knowledge but also by precise moral and social virtues. Frank tackles the issue of choosing a doctor starting from the person, from outward behavior, from physical, moral and intellectual qualities, then moving to professional conduct toward colleagues, patients, surgeons, apothecaries and other health workers. The text clearly shows how, already at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the fiduciary relationship between physician and patient was considered an essential part of clinical practice. The work is therefore significant both for the history of medicine and for the history of professional ethics and the health culture aimed at the public. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR Giuseppe Frank, belonging to the renowned Frank medical family, was a physician and teacher active between Austria and Italy from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. He practiced in hospital and university settings, holding clinical positions in Vienna and teaching in Pavia. His training fell within the great tradition of Central European clinical medicine which, between the 18th and 19th centuries, contributed to the progressive rationalization of patient observation, diagnosis and therapeutic practice. The Guide for non-medics reflects the intention to make understandable to the public the criteria for judging the quality of medical practice. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The work originated in a German-speaking area and was quickly translated into Italian for a wider audience. The Venetian edition of 1802, printed by Modesto Fenzo, testifies to Italian interest in the new models of clinical medicine and in the issues of ethics and physician selection. The translation, provided with annotations, goes beyond mere transfer of the text by adapting it to the Italian cultural and health context. The print run was likely relatively small and aimed at educated readers, families, administrators and health workers.
