FREDERICK PERCY GRAVES (BRITISH 1837-1903), PORTRAIT OF ELEANOR JOLLIFFE

FREDERICK PERCY GRAVES (BRITISH 1837-1903) PORTRAIT OF ELEANOR JOLLIFFE, WIFE OF COLONEL FREDERICK CUSTANCE Oil on canvas Signed and dated '1881' (verso) 73.5 x 61cm (28¾ x 24in.) Eleanor Custance (née Jolliffe, 1851-1908) was the daughter of Hylton Jolliffe and Elizabeth Tyrwhitt-Jones. On the 18th July 1871 she married Colonel Frederick Hambleton Custance and the couple divided their time between the social circles of St John's Wood and their seat at Weston, Norfolk. Their eldest daughter, Olive, was an Aesthetic Movement poet who went on to marry Lord Alfred Douglas. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and is providing good support. Craquelure is present across the image with some more prominent cupping and lifting to the sitter's white dress. Small superficial scratches. Inspection under UV reveals various restorations throughout, including larger areas to the foliage in the lower right corner, to the sitter's right sleeve, to her neckline, sections to her hair and the right of her head. Smaller retouches are scattered throughout including to the sitter's visage, decolletage, clothing and across the background. The image presents some very light surface dirt.
