Alla auktioner / Diverse / French Realist School (c. 1860) - Portrait of a Young Woman with a Prayer Book
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - This sober portrait exemplifies the social and moral ideal of the bourgeois woman in mid-19th-century France, a period shaped by the rigor of the Second Empire and the consolidation of provincial and family values. The restrained composure of the young woman, exalted by the severity of the dark dress, the tidy lace at the cuffs, and the modest braided hairstyle, responds to an archetype of virtue where piety and moderation were the pillars of social respectability. The prayer book or devotional book she firmly holds in her hand is not a mere decorative accessory, but the public manifestation of her role as guardian of the moral order in the domestic home. However, beneath that patina of austerity imposed by 19th-century convention, her serene gaze and the subtle presence of the jewels — the cameo and the gold earrings — reveal the serene dignity, composure, and discreet distinction of the French woman of her time, whose quiet influence articulated family and institutional life away from the profane bustle of the public sphere. - Image dimensions without frame: 53 x 63 cm / 67 x 76.5 cm with exclusive custom-made frame.
