French school (XX) - Napoleon Bonaparte – Large Military Portrait

Large and striking oil on canvas portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, dating from around 1900 and inspired by the great Napoleonic military portrait tradition of the 19th century. Napoleon is depicted in military uniform in a dynamic composition, wearing a dark coat with red collar, richly decorated waistcoat and sash. The dramatic pose, movement of the background and strong contrasts of black, red and gold give the painting considerable decorative presence. The face is immediately recognisable as Napoleon, while particular attention has been given to the details of the uniform, sash and military accessories. A fine example of European historicist painting from around 1900, created during a period in which Napoleonic imagery continued to enjoy considerable popularity throughout Europe. Oil on canvas, mounted on a wooden stretcher and presented in its substantial moulded wooden frame with gilt details. The painting is in good overall condition for its age, with signs of age and use consistent with the photographs. Please examine the detailed images, which form an integral part of the condition description. Canvas dimensions: 92 × 63 cm Framed dimensions: 108 × 80 cm An impressive large-format decorative painting with particular appeal to collectors of Napoleonic history, military art and European historical portraiture. The work is unsigned/unattributed and is not presented as a painting from the Napoleonic period itself.
