Furosaki’byôbu 風炉先屏風 (tea-ceremony folding screen) - Lacquered wood

A lovely low and wide two-panel furosaki’byôbu 風炉先屏風 (tea-ceremony folding screen), made with a central span of stretched, semi-transparent mesh set within a black lacquered wooden frame. The mesh is coloured with a soft water-ripple pattern, evoking the surface of a calm stream. Its gentle translucency subtly obscures what lies behind. The front is bordered with a purple brocade band, and the reverse with an ecru band. In Japan, screens of this type are traditionally placed as a backdrop for ikebana arrangements or tea ceremony utensils. Period: Japan – Late Shôwa period (1970s–1980s) Dimensions: Total width 189 cm (2 × 94.5 cm); Height 48.5 cm In a very good condition with general signs of wear consistent with age, including some foxing to the mesh. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition reference. The screen can also be mounted flat on a wall and displayed as a single work of art. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
