Gabriele Carelli (1820-1900) - Ravello

• Author: Gabriele Carelli (Naples, 1820 – Mentone, 1900) • Title: Ravello • Technique and Support: Watercolor on paper • Century: 19th century Description of the Work Ravello represents a refined testament to the technical mastery and descriptive sensitivity of Gabriele Carelli in landscape and architectural painting. The work captures the luminous and solemn essence of the famous coastal town, suspended between the rock and the azure Campanian sky. With a fluid, transparent, and extraordinarily rigorous brushstroke—typical of the artist's watercolor virtuosity—the composition exalts the architectural details and the vertical geography of the site. Natural light models the volumes of the historic buildings and ancient walls, blending analytical precision of an academic matrix with the vibrant, picturesque breath of nineteenth-century veduta painting. The clever use of the paper's white reserves and delicate chromatic nuances immediately conveys the rarefied, silent, and sun-drenched atmosphere of one of the most evocative views in Southern Italy. Biographical Notes of the Artist Gabriele Carelli was born in Naples in 1820 into a celebrated family of artists linked to the tradition of the Posillipo School. He initially trained under the guidance of his father Raffaele and subsequently perfected the refined watercolor technique in Rome alongside his brother Gonsalvo. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively in Europe: he stayed for long periods in England (becoming a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Watercolours in London in 1874) and in France, achieving major international recognition, including the gold medal in Boston in 1881. Specializing in interior views, architecture, and marine landscapes of the Amalfi and Neapolitan coasts, Carelli combined descriptive realism with a cosmopolitan spirit in his works. He passed away in Mentone in 1900.
