Gaston Gilbert Daniel SAVE (1844–1901) - Lot 186

Gaston Gilbert Daniel SAVE (1844–1901) The Gambling Den of the Albanian and Lorraine Cavalrymen, Founded in 1588 by the Canons of Saint-Dié, 1883 Oil on canvas, signed with initials and dated in the lower left corner, with the title on the cartouche. Dimensions: 151 x 261 cm. (Small dent in the lower left corner; the canvas needs to be re-stretched; scratches; soiled; small flaking, some of which has been partially filled in; restorations). This significant historical composition depicts an episode from the life of Saint Dié in the late 16th century. In order to divert the local bourgeoisie from their political demands, the canons of Saint-Dié are said to have established a gambling house, frequented in particular by Albanian cavalrymen in the service of the Duke of Lorraine. This episode is recounted by Charles-Louis Gravier in his *History of the Episcopal City and the District of Saint-Dié*. Henri Bardy, however, in “Les Guerres d’autrefois dans le pays de Saint-Dié (1894),” qualifies Gravier’s interpretation regarding the intentions attributed to the canons. The date “1588” appearing on the frame’s cartouche appears to be incorrect, as historical sources primarily refer to the year 1592, particularly regarding the presence of Albanian cavalry companies in Saint-Dié.
