GATTINONI (Christian) & VIGOUROUX (Yannick). — Photography (1839–1960). Paris, Éditions Scala, “Tableaux choisis” series, 2001. Square 8vo, 127 pp., paperback with illustrated softcover in color; numerous black-and-white and color photographic reproductions. ISBN 2-86656-279-8. First edition of this introductory work on the history of photography, covering everything from Nicéphore Niépce’s early experiments to the major developments in the medium during the 20th century. The bibliographic details match: Scala, 2001, 127 pages, format approximately 20.5 × 16.5 cm. The book is organized around twelve representative works or photographers, chosen to illustrate the major transformations brought about by photography: portraiture, landscape, nude, photojournalism, fashion, advertising, and the relationship between photography and the fine arts. The BnF aptly describes the volume as a “very brief history” of photography through twelve key figures, supplemented by a detailed analysis of one work. Notable figures featured include Nicéphore Niépce, whose famous *Point de vue du Gras* from 1826 is presented as one of the first permanent photographic images, as well as Martin Chambi, Edward Steichen, and other major figures in the history of the medium. The photograph reproduced on the cover is **“Boboutte, Rouzat” (1908) by Jacques Henri Lartigue**, an attribution explicitly noted on the back of the title page of this copy. Christian Gattinoni, an art critic and educator, is the author of numerous works on photography; Yannick Vigouroux is a critic and photographer. Their collaboration has continued in several publications devoted to the history and criticism of photography. Good condition inside. The cover is slightly worn, with some scuffing and signs of use. Most notably, the lower part of the back cover has several fairly pronounced creases, as well as small superficial marks. Nevertheless, the copy is clean and sturdy.
