Gebroeders en P.A.A

Gilded silver chalice, paten, and spoon crafted by the renowned Dutch silversmiths Gebroeders van Roosmalen on Oosterkade in Utrecht. This chalice dates from 1923. The entire piece is made of 2nd quality .835 silver and gilded. On a round collar-shaped foot rises the stem with a spherical nodus above which a wide, bulging cupola sits. The whole is decorated as follows: the foot bears three chased medallions of curling and interwoven ears of corn and grapevines. In the central one, a scene of Christ on the cross flanked by John and Mary. The two other medallions depict drinking stags. A reference to Psalm 42: “as the hart panteth after the water brooks.” The round nodus, stem, and opposite cupola have a decoration of chased rose garlands and roses in lobes, studded with opals and red stones. The set can be dismantled into 3 parts. On the underside of the foot the chalice bears the inscription: “Fecerunt Gebr. v. Roosmalen Ultraject.” And “J.W. Oostveen 1923’’. The paten is smooth and features on the front a small medallion with a engraving of a four-passage motif containing the portrait of the crucified Christ. The chalice lid with ribbed handle and curled leaf motif with a cross inside. The piece is kept in a small case from the Roosmalen firm, imitation leather with a velvet lining. It bears the inscription: “Gebr. v. Roosmalen Edelsmederij Utrecht Holland” The case is in poor condition. • Dating: 1923 • Place of manufacture: Utrecht • Maker: Gebr. en P.A.A. van Roosmalen • Silver content: 2nd quality • Weight: 709 grams • Condition: good. Silvering worn here and there, small scratches on the cupola. Kaub, Utrecht 1918) - Sword mark (= small works, .835 silver content) On the paten: - Sword mark (= small works, .835 silver content) On the chalice lid: - PR3 in a horizontal hexagon (= master mark P.A.A. and brothers van Roosmalen, Utrecht 1913-1953) - Sword mark (= small works, .835 silver content) The chalice was made in 1923 for Johannes Wilhelmus Oostveen, born in 1894 in Utrecht and died in 1972. Probably this is the same Oostveen who was the author of Velua Catholica, a two-volume standard work on the history of the Roman Catholic Church of the Veluwe, written by J.W. Oostveen. The book was self-published in Apeldoorn between 1950 and 1953. The chalice (calix in Latin) is a vessel that belongs within the Catholic Church to the vasa sacra (the sacred vessels) of liturgical silverware. The chalice consists of a cup (cuppa), a foot, and between them a decorated node. During the Eucharistic celebration the chalice is used to hold the consecrated wine, which, after the epiclesis, becomes the blood of Jesus Christ. Because the chalice is thus involved in the part of the Eucharist that is considered the most holy, most chalices are exceptionally richly and lovingly decorated.
