GEORGE LUKS OIL, PORTRAIT OF MARY MULDOON.

A George Luks (1866–1933) oil on canvas, portrait of a red-haired girl with rosy cheeks, wearing a dark garment over a blue blouse, against a loosely painted gray background. Inscribed on verso ”Mary Muldoon, George Luks ‘28.” Retains a Worcester Art Museum label identifying the work as ”Portrait of Little Girl” by George Luks, as well as a Coe Kerr Gallery, New York, label. Presented in an ornate giltwood frame with raised floral and foliate decoration. Image 23.5” x 19.5”, Frame 32.5” x 29”. Provenance: The Esther and Howard Freeman Collection. Auctioneer’s Note: A member of the Ashcan School, Luks and his counterparts were known for their highly realistic depictions of New York City working class life. Identified on the back as Mary Muldoon, the sitter was likely the child of an Irish immigrant, depicting a slightly mischievous looking child with a shock of red hair, a half smile and eyes focused on something out of frame.
