(Plexiglas 100 UV Gallery Antireflex) Poster with dimensions 35.3cm x 27.4cm in excellent condition - by Magnum photographer George Rodger Title: Chiefs from Hassau demonstrate their superb riding skills in a “Fantasia”, N'Djamena (formerly Fort Lamy), Chad. 1941. George Rodger/Magnum Photos British, 1908–1995 George Rodger was born in 1908 in Cheshire and served in the British Merchant Navy. After a brief stay in America, he worked as a photographer for the BBC magazine “The Listener” and subsequently, in 1938, for a short time for the Black Star Agency. His pictures from the London Blitz brought Life magazine to his attention, and he became a war photographer. He earned eighteen campaign medals for his reporting on the activities of the Free French Forces in West Africa and subsequently documented the front lines in Eritrea, Abyssinia, and the Western Desert. He traveled to Iran, Burma, North Africa, Sicily, and Salerno in Italy, where he met Robert Capa and befriended him. After reporting on the liberation of France, Belgium, and Holland, Rodger in April 1945 became the first photographer to enter the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. In May he photographed for Time and Life the German surrender in Lüneburg. Traumatized by the experience of looking for “beautiful compositions” among the dead, Rodger undertook a 28,000-mile journey through Africa and the Middle East, focusing on wildlife, rituals, and ways of living that are closely related to nature. In 1947 Rodger was invited to co-found Magnum Photos together with Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour, and William Vandivert. His next major journey was a Trans-African trip from the Cape to Cairo, during which he captured extraordinary images of the Nuba people of Kordofan, which appeared for the first time in National Geographic in 1951. Africa remained an important theme for him for more than thirty years. George Rodger, who was immensely successful in his lifetime, died on 24 July 1995 in Kent.
