Gerard Schäperkötter was originally a graphic designer and, in 1914, chose free painting. His approach to the medium was spontaneous and free and led, after an initial figurative phase, in the 1960s and 1970s to powerful compositions. These, in their balancing between abstraction and figuration, somewhat recall the lyrically abstract art of the École de Paris. The painter created a new reality from his memory and imagination, which he often elaborated in themes such as beaches, walls, or gardens.
