The obverse features the portrait of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797-1848), one of the most important Austrian? German writers and poets of German literature, depicted in profile with an elegant sculptural treatment and surrounded by her name and birth and death dates. The reverse shows the bucking horse, a traditional emblem of Westphalia, accompanied by the legend Notgeld, the province name, the face value of 500 Mark, and the issue date. The specimen preserves an attractive original brown color, corresponding to the BN designation, with sharp reliefs, uniform surfaces and excellent mint luster, characteristics fully in line with the MS64 BN grade awarded by NGC. This issue forms part of the prestigious Westphalia Notgeld series, minted in various metals during the 1923 hyperinflation crisis, becoming a distinguished historical and numismatic testimony of one of Germany’s most turbulent economic periods.
