Gillard (XIX-XX) - Jeune femme au foulard rouge

Interesting 19th-century female portrait, executed in oil on canvas and signed “Gillard,” which depicts a young woman dressed in clothing of popular or regional character. The model appears from the half-length, slightly turned, directing an intense, direct gaze at the viewer that constitutes the main expressive center of the composition. Her face, carefully modeled with warm flesh tones and delicate reddish hues, contrasts with the dark hair and with the intense red scarf that partly covers her head. The clothing is another of the painting’s especially attractive elements. The young woman wears a wide white shirt decorated at the upper part of the sleeve with a band of floral motifs, while the scarf provides the main chromatic accent of the composition. The artist deliberately omits accessory elements. The background, virtually neutral and built with grayish and purplish tones, allows all attention to be concentrated on the model and emphasizes the intimate character of the portrait. The work participates in the European realist and genre painting tradition of the second half of the 19th century, a period in which representations of peasants, rural young people and characters dressed in regional clothes gained considerable importance. In this case, the painter combines an individual observation of the face with a certain idealization of the figure, giving it a particularly expressive presence. Signature and possible authorship The painting is signed “Gillard.” The surname is documented in both the French and British contexts, and in the absence of additional documentation that could unequivocally identify the author, we consider it prudent to keep its cataloging open as a work of a possible French or British school from the 19th century. It is nevertheless particularly interesting to note the existence of the British painter William Gillard (born around 1812), an artist who carried out much of his activity between Great Britain and Ireland. William Gillard worked in a considerable variety of genres, including portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, and animal painting. His strong connection with Ireland is documented: he began exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1831 and participated there regularly until 1876, presenting a total of 72 works. Particularly relevant to the study of the present painting is that Gillard also made portraits and female representations of a popular character. The auction market documents, among others, A Half-Length Study of a Girl Holding a Small Spray of Flowers, The Gamekeeper's Daughter and various portraits included among his oil studies. Even more significant is the existence of Irish Girl and Child, an oil painting signed and dated by William Gillard in 1855, whose old label also documented acquisition directly from the artist in 1859. The present work shows certain technical and stylistic affinities with the figurative production attributed to William Gillard, especially for the naturalistic treatment of the face, the construction of the flesh tones, the popular character of the model, and the way the figure is highlighted against a deliberately simple background. These similarities, together with the signature itself, make the possible relation to the British circle particularly interesting and worthy of study. However, in the absence of documentation, complete inscription, or expert study that could establish an unequivocal correspondence, the work is not presented as an autograph painting by William Gillard, but as a Gillard-signed work whose possible relation to this artist constitutes an interesting line of inquiry. Chronology and conservation Due to its material, stylistic, and pictorial characteristics, the work can be placed in the second half of the 19th century, within the European tradition of realist and genre portraiture. The gilded frame of historicist taste complements the painting and its nineteenth-century character especially well. The work shows signs of its age. Its state of conservation should be judged through the photographs provided, which form an integral part of the description. The frame is included free of charge as a gift, not considered an integral part of the work nor assigned any commercial value. Therefore, any eventual damage to the frame during transport cannot be grounds for a claim. The work will be carefully packed to ensure maximum possible protection during transport.
