Girl with Dog. European Romantic School - 19th Century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 61 x 40 cm and 71 x 50 cm. The scene depicts a girl dressed in an elegant attire and with a melancholic expression, tenderly embracing a white-furred, dark-spotted dog, creating a scene of emotional intimacy. The portrait is framed within a twilight landscape, whose green and gold tones in the background enhance the sensitivity of the composition. The artist uses meticulous brushwork to define the details of the face, the fabrics, and the animal’s fur, achieving a surface rich in textures and nuances. The soft, enveloping light contributes to the nostalgic and affectionate atmosphere typical of Romantic painting. This work is part of the nineteenth-century tradition of sentimental portraiture, where the connection between childhood and nature acts as a symbolic vehicle for innocence, affection, and idealized beauty. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed.
