The turbulent years following World War I gave women in all European countries a whole new outlook on life. After having worked on a large scale for the first time during the war in industry, administration, skilled trades, and healthcare, there was no going back to the kitchen and the home. A general sense of renewal brought with it new short hairstyles, figure-hugging dresses, and even new, sensual cosmetics. Equally revolutionary was the new music of the era. The Charleston, the foxtrot, “Texas Tommy,” and numerous other jazz and swing dances brought a new sense of freedom and physicality to the dance floor as well. Innovative jewellery was, of course, an integral part of this, and it’s no surprise that particularly long necklaces became popular—necklaces that moved with the rhythm of the new music and the body’s movements, further emphasizing the dancer’s elegance. These long strands of pearls, silk ribbons, or delicate platinum chains were always accompanied by large pendants. Since—unlike with rings or bracelets—there were no practical design constraints dictating their function, the jewellery designers of the time were able to give free rein to their creativity. Most are elongated, symmetrical, and characterized by a cool, diamond-studded elegance. Basic geometric shapes, zigzag lines, stepped designs, as well as Chinese and Indian influences distinguish the finest of these works. The pendant presented here meets these criteria. Crafted from 14-karat gold beneath a platinum setting, the pendant features sparkling diamonds in a geometric, coolly shimmering design. Two beautiful old-cut diamonds and two octagonal diamonds adorn the center, while nine smaller diamond roses add additional highlights. The piece of jewellery’s structure is reminiscent of a lantern—a swinging source of light in front of an exotic temple. We’ve paired this beautiful piece with a matching platinum chain so it can be worn around the neck right away.
