GRIESHABER, HAP (1909-1981) "Verkehrt alles verkehrt" 1980

Farbholzschnitt auf festem Papier. Darstellungsmaß ca. 60 x 59 cm (Blattmaß ca. 69 x 59 cm). Unten rechts mit Bleistift signiert 'Grieshaber', unten links nummeriert '475/500'. Exemplar 475 einer Auflage von 500 Drucken. Gerahmt. 68 x 65 cm. | GRIESHABER, HAP (1909–1981) “Verkehrt alles verkehrt” 1980 Color woodcut on heavy paper. Image size approx. 60 × 59 cm (sheet size approx. 69 × 59 cm). Signed in pencil lower right “Grieshaber,” numbered lower left “475/500.” Edition 475 of 500 prints. Framed. 68 × 65 cm. With the work Verkehrt alles verkehrt from his late period (1980), HAP Grieshaber addresses the theme of modern mobility and traffic life in a humorous yet critical manner. As one of the most influential woodcut artists of post-war German art, Grieshaber combines everyday motifs in this composition—an automobile, a motorcyclist, and two waiting figures—with a circular, decorative border featuring stylized rose motifs. The ironic title is reflected in the playful juxtaposition of technological dynamism and organic symmetry. Through his reduced, poster-like visual language and effective use of flat areas of red, green, and blue, Grieshaber achieves a visually powerful synthesis of contemporary social criticism and the popular tradition of the woodcut. Good, fresh-from-the-press condition with strong, vibrant colors. The paper shows very slight age-related browning in the narrow margins outside the image area.
