HAYNES KING (BRITISH 1831-1904), MATERNAL CARE

HAYNES KING (BRITISH 1831-1904) MATERNAL CARE Oil on canvas Signed and dated '1872' (lower left) 91 x 71cm (35¾ x 27¾in.) Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and appears to be providing good support. Some abrasions and small losses to the extreme edges commensurate with rubbing to the frame. Craquelure is present throughout, most notably to the white and flesh tones of the sitters and the background in the upper right quadrant. An area of yellowing varnish is visible in natural light to the lower left corner. Inspection under UV reveals various areas of scattered retouching, including infilling to the woman's hair, face, decolletage, arm and clothing. Further areas of overpaint are evident to the basket and fabrics, as well as scattered across the background. Some pink pigments on the figures fluoresce under UV but it is possible that these may be original to the work. The image presents an uneven layer of cloudy varnish and light surface dirt.
