Rare use of intaglio (etching, burin engraving and aquatint) for this colour engraving titled "Praying Mantis" signed by the American artist Helen Phillips. Artist's proof. Title: Praying Mantis Artist: Helen Phillips (1913-1994) Technique: Intaglio Style: Abstract Signature: signed and numbered by the artist in pencil Plate format: 27 x 22 cm Sheet format: 52 x 35 cm Condition: Excellent condition. Shows no signs of wear. Her career unfolded between France and the United States. Born in California, she settled in Paris in 1936 to join Atelier 17, a hub of graphic experimentation and Surrealism. There she refined her avant-garde engraving techniques alongside the British artist Stanley William Hayter, who would become her husband. Exiled to New York during World War II, she moved among the major figures of Abstract Expressionism, such as Jackson Pollock and Louise Bourgeois.
