Henry Dagneau (France, 19th century) Still Life with Violin, Sheet Music and a Vase of Flowers Second half of the 19th century (1877) Oil on canvas Signed bottom right Dimensions: 50 x 41 cm framed Canvas: 33 x 25 cm Within a gilded frame On the back a Parisian label «Général des Cadres – Paris, 66 Rue de Rennes» Critical note: a work of pleasant execution quality, characterized by a balanced compositional setup, accurate description of the objects and a suggestive intimate atmosphere, attributable to the French bourgeois still-life tradition of the late nineteenth century. Frame and provenance The work is presented within a rich gilded frame, featuring flutes, beading, grooves and angular botanical motifs, particularly suited to nineteenth-century French painting. Condition Report The work appears in fair/good overall condition, consistent with its age. The canvas supports appears overall stable and regularly tensioned on the stretcher. Examination of the paint surface reveals normal aging signs, with light abrasions and small surface irregularities. The varnish appears partially altered and slightly yellowed, causing in some areas a general lowering of contrasts and a rather brownish tone. Overall state: fair/good for its age. Only prudent conservation is recommended, and, if necessary, a light cleaning by a qualified restorer. *** Photographic note Some photographic images of the work were taken using professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and paint material. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only. The frame is provided free of charge as a token with the work and should be considered accessory, not included in the economic valuation of the painting. Due to the natural fragility of antique gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss of frame parts occurring during transport or shipping cannot be subject to refund, compensation or dispute regarding the value of the work. The packaging will nonetheless be prepared with maximum care to ensure, as far as possible, safe transport. Insured shipment Attributive Expertise *** For historical-interest reasons the work cannot be shipped outside the European Community / insured shipment in a wooden crate
