Herkimer Diamond Ring / new Set in 925 sterling silver New and unworn 8.9 mm x 8.7 mm Weight: 2.90 g / 14.5 ct Ring size: EU 57 UK P 1/2 US 8.0 FR 17 Inner diameter 18.1 mm Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals found in exposed dolomite outcrops in and around Herkimer County, New York, and the Mohawk River Valley in the USA. They are not diamonds; the name 'diamond' owes its origin to their clarity and well-formed faces. Since the first finds were in the village of Middleville or in the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also referred to as Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond. Herkimer diamonds gained wide recognition after workers discovered them in large quantities while mining dolomite in the Mohawk River Valley in the late 18th century. Geologists discovered exposed dolomite at outcrops in Herkimer County and began mining there, which led to the designation 'Herkimer Diamond'. Double-terminated quartz crystals are found worldwide. Shipping as insured registered mail.
