Herman Miller

Absolute Icon: Lounge chair – Design Charles and Ray Eames – Produced by ICF, Herman Miller We present at auction the most famous seat of the 20th century: the lounge chair in its most sophisticated version, characterized by black lacquered shells and a cognac leather upholstery. Created in 1956, this chair has become the universal symbol of authorial design, born from the designers' desire to offer a welcome as inviting as a “used baseball glove.” Design and history: the evolution of comfort The Lounge Chair represents the culmination of the Eames’ research into bentwood technology applied to domestic well-being. Well-being engineering: the structure is composed of three shaped plywood shells, connected by supports in rubber and metal (shock mounts) that allow a slight dynamic flex, guaranteeing a superior relaxation experience. Perfect synthesis: the project fuses the efficiency of industrial production with meticulous artisanal detail, transforming a classic club chair into a modern sculpture that dominates the space even as a single piece. Lot conditions: The lot on sale presents an unusual and rarer version with a black lacquered shell and cognac-colored leather upholstery. The chair has undergone careful conservative restoration and today appears in excellent condition, preserving the authentic soul of the original piece. Shells and metals: the black lacquered shells are in perfect, intact condition with no structural defects. The aluminum parts are excellent, with only very slight signs of use consistent with the object's history. Original leather from the era: the upholstery in fine cognac leather is the original of the period and has been preserved very well. It is intact and bears a charming “lived-in” character that only time can confer, showing only light and natural signs of use that enhance its authenticity. Authenticity: the originality and dating to the 1970s are confirmed by the label “Herman Miller made by ICF” preserved beneath the frame, and by the code 670/B impressed in relief on the aluminum base casting, a technical detail identifying the original foundry molds of the era. The construction details further testify to the high quality and originality of this ICF/Herman Miller piece. Dimensions Width: 81 cm Depth: 90 cm Height: 79 cm Seat height: 40 cm The Designers: Charles and Ray Eames Charles and Ray Eames were not just designers but true pioneers of global visual culture, capable of influencing architecture, cinema, and postwar graphic design. Their approach, distilled in the motto “the best for the most for the least,” aimed to solve complex problems through simple, accessible aesthetic solutions. Their creative union allowed them to fuse Charles’s architectural rigor with Ray’s chromatic and artistic sensibility, giving life to objects that transcend temporal dimensions. Many of their creations are today part of the permanent collections of the world's leading museums, such as MoMA in New York, testimony to a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of designers. The Lounge Chair remains, without doubt, their most exalted manifesto on the dignity of modern living. The Manufacturer: ICF, Herman Miller ICF production marks a golden chapter for European design, being one of the very few companies worldwide to obtain the official license to produce Eames designs. Thanks to the extraordinary craftsmanship of Italian artisans, ICF managed to combine American industrial rigor with meticulous attention to detail and material selection, making these lots particularly sought after by international collectors for their superior construction precision and rarity. Herman Miller is the American company that immortalized the Lounge Chair, a world leader in furniture design since 1905.
