Himmelpfort Monastery Ruins – A Glimpse by Gary Westall Painting 19.7 x 15.8 :: The painting depicts part of the Himmelpfort monastery ruins in Brandenburg including the characteristic brick arches. The focus is on the preserved sections of wall whose surfaces bear the marks of ageing and weathering. Vegetation growing along the upper edge of the wall and within the arches connects the architecture with the surrounding natural landscape. The sketch for the painting was created in 2019 during an on-site plein air gathering. On this basis the scene was simplified pictorially and translated into clearly structured areas of colour. The composition draws the eye through the arcades into the depth whilst the open foreground and the tranquil sky form a counterpoint to the textured wall. In terms of colour the warm brick-red tones contrast with the cooler shades of green and blue.
