Historicism Pewter Pewter Miner - Pit Boss (Overseer) / Pewter - 21 cm - 21 cm

Saxony – Thuringia, incised 1708–1733. Freiberg – Historical – Fine Pewter (Edelzinn) Freiberg: Center of silver mining. Likely comparable to the workshop of the Freiberg master = Albert Western = Initials: A.W. Marking: 17. A. W. 33 points in a spectacular way to a famous master of the 17th century. Albert Western, who created his works for the nobility and the Elector. The "33" signifies 1733 (the year of Augustus the Strong's death)—thus the exact year of manufacture or donation. Caster's mark on the underside, raised in the casting! Oval cartouche with initials A W (W is struck/overlapping). A miner in a long apron holds a miner's axe (Bergbarte) in his right hand, and an ore balance for silver testing in his left hand. The miner / pit boss (Obersteiger) is cast in fine pewter (historical). Typical miner's hat (Schachthut, feather missing). Finely crafted face, long hairstyle. In his right hand, he holds the light (candle holder). In his left hand, he holds the miner's axe (Bergbarte, tip missing). Miner's tunic (Kittel) with buttons and trim, as well as knee-breeches with stockings. Underneath the coat are the long miner's leather apron (Arschleder / protective leather) and the belt. The pit boss stands on a square plate mounted on a sphere, which in turn is attached to a round base. Incised on the base are the initials: 17 A. W. 33. Total height: 21 cm Base width: approx. 19 cm 2. The second figure is apparently also from the same period, though without any markings. The pit boss stands on a plate decorated with ornaments. Hat with feather; in his right hand he holds the miner's axe. The round base rests on four paw feet. Height: 23 cm Base width: 11 cm. A very beautiful set in good condition. This ornamental pewter (Prunkzinn) was formerly referred to as "Freiberg silver" and was constantly polished bright. Over the years, the pewter has acquired its typical matte, dark grey aged patina. The pit boss figure originates from an old collection, acquired around 1960, inherited by the son, and purchased by me in 2023. The seller guarantees that they have the right to sell and export the goods. For deliveries to England, the buyer is responsible for customs clearance and the appropriate permits. Freiberger - Historisches - Edelzinn Freiberg : Zentrum des Silberbergbaus. wohl Vergleichbar wie aus der Werkstatt des Freiberger Meisters = Albert Western = Initialen : A.W. Kennung : 17.
