Julius Ludwig August Koch On the brain of a bush-woman. Inaugural dissertation for the medical and surgical doctorate under the presidency of Dr. Hubert v. Luschka Tübingen 1867 J. L. A. Koch (1841-1908) later became director of the Württemberg State Lunatic Asylum at Zwiefalten; he became famous for his work on psychopathological inferiority (Ravensburg 1891-93). In this dissertation he vigorously argues that the brain of this African woman has nothing in common with an ape brain and clearly shows that this "bush-woman" (and all Africans) are human. In the 19th century, a number of Africans—slaves!—were brought to Europe where they were displayed and demeaned in various ways. The best known is surely Sarah Baartman of the Khoi people in South Africa, known as the Hottentot Venus Original paperback, 26 pages
