Hollandse School (XIX) - Charles Kean (1811–1868) als Hamlet (No Reserve)

Artist: Dutch School, 19th century Title: Charles Kean (1811–1868) as Hamlet Medium and technique: oil on canvas Dimensions: 31.5 × 27 cm; with frame 45 × 39 cm Signature: unsigned; annotations on the back Style: Romanticism Provenance: Dutch art collection Charles John Kean (1811–1868) was an English actor and theatre manager born in Waterford, the son of actor Edmund Kean. He made his debut in 1827 at the Drury Lane Theatre in London. His performance as Hamlet at the same theatre in 1838 established his reputation as a tragedian. From 1850 he co-led the Princess’s Theatre in London, where he staged Shakespeare productions with particular attention to historical costumes and décors. The portrait shows him in his role as Hamlet. Charles Kean is depicted in half-length as Hamlet, head slightly tilted to the left and gaze turned to the side. His right hand rests against his chest with fingers spread. He wears dark clothing with a wide, light-colored lace collar and a cloak draped over the shoulder. To the left is a reddish-brown drapery; the remaining background consists of dark brown and olive-green fields. The face, collar and hand form the lightest elements of the scene. Technical and material analysis The canvas is stretched on a wooden frame. The face and hand are modeled with gradual tonal transitions. The edging decoration consists of fine, light brushstrokes; the cloak folds are indicated by angular light accents. Craquelé is visible in the paint surface. The varnish has a yellow colour impression. On the back, there is a rectangular repair patch at the top. The upper wooden edge bears handwritten annotations, including the identification of the proposed person and his role. Composition and form analysis The figure nearly fills the entire upright image field. The diagonal tilt of the head and the diagonally placed lower arm interrupt the mostly vertical order. Face, collar and hand form a coherent group of light accents against the dark clothing. The cloak folds guide the eye to the hand on the chest. The background is spatially limited, bringing the figure close to the picture plane. Stylistic and art-historical context The work belongs to the nineteenth century and aligns with the Romantic portrait tradition. The emphasis on facial expression, the pronounced hand gesture, the costuming and the strong contrast between light skin tones and dark surroundings support this stylistic placement. The subject has the character of a theatre portrait, in which the person portrayed appears in a specific role. Comparable artists Jan Adam Kruseman, Nicolaas Pieneman, Cornelis Kruseman, Thomas Lawrence, François Gérard Condition The painting has discolouration and an aged varnish layer. An old crack on the back has been repaired with a patch and retouched on the front. The surface shows craquelé and locally small damages. The frame has old, in-painted damage and cracking in the finish layer. Conclusion This unsigned theatre portrait of Charles Kean as Hamlet is placed within the Dutch School of the nineteenth century and shows characteristics of Romanticism. The work originates from a Dutch art collection. The current material condition is characterised by yellowing, varnish miscolouring, craquelé and an old crack repair with retouches; the frame also shows previous restoration work. The work "Charles Kean (1811–1868) as Hamlet" sits in a green-beige coloured wooden frame with in-painted damages (see photos) Total dimensions: 45x39 cm Medium dimensions: 31.5x27 cm All shipments in professional packaging via FedEx, DPD or PostNL.
