Alla auktioner / Porslin & Keramik / Holy Land Pottery Group | Clay Juglet, Pedestal Jar + Unguentarium

Near East, Holy Land, Roman period. A trio of buff-bodied terracotta vessels, wheel-thrown in the pale, gritty clays of the eastern Mediterranean and still carrying the earthen encrustation of burial. The first is a one-handled juglet, its ovoid body ringed with close-set throwing grooves and drawn up to a pinched rim above a narrow ring foot. The second, larger in scale, swells from a pedestal base into a piriform body girdled with combed ribbing, rising to a tall collar neck and a broad flaring lip. The third takes the classic unguentarium silhouette: a bulbous belly on a spooled stem, capped by a disc mouth pierced with a narrow pouring hole. Such vessels held oils, unguents, and perfumed resins in domestic and funerary use across the Roman Levant. The unguentarium, a specialized oil and perfume container, is one of the most widely distributed vessel forms of the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean. Its narrow aperture slowed evaporation and metered out costly contents drop by drop: balsam, nard, myrrh-infused oil. Fusiform examples dominate the Hellenistic centuries; the squatter, pedestal-footed bulbous type with a disc mouth belongs largely to the Roman era, when such flasks accompanied the dead in tomb deposits from Judaea to Syria in considerable numbers. The ribbed and combed exteriors seen on two of these vessels were produced by holding a toothed tool against the turning pot, a fast decorative shortcut that also improved grip on oil-slicked surfaces.
