Three Unique Pairs of Unadopted $500 Designs. HONG KONG (SAR). Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 500 Dollars, 31.3.1973. P-Unlisted. Artist's Rendition. PMG Encapsulated. The first of three pairs of hand painted, unadopted artist's renditions for the 1973 HSBC $500. Obverse in brown and blue, Bank arms at left, Bank titles upper centre and upper right, lion watermark at right. The reverse is in blue, featuring the profile of one of the HSBC lions looking out over Victoria Harbour. The choice of colours, similar to those used in the previous design, was probably chosen to offer a sense of continuity, comfort and stability. The main design features on this rendition can be seen on the final issued notes, but this design was probably not chosen due to the lack of security features and the relatively small size of the Bank titles. By the early 1970s, the 'Jackson' $500 had been in circulation for over 35 years, and the Bank felt the need to change the design, size and security features to keep up with the times. The $500 note still had large purchasing power at that point, and care was needed to find a suitable replacement; hence the gap of four years from 1969 to 1973 between the Jackson $500 and the 'Humpback Grouper' $500. Presumably, during this interim, much material from the initial brainstorms was produced, including the two pairs of artists' renderings offered in the next two lots. Each of these is a unique item and offers a fascinating insight into the pre-production stages of bank design and production. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000. 三對存世唯一之未經採納伍佰圓設計圖稿。 1973年香港上海匯豐銀行伍佰圓。手繪圖稿。 1973年滙豐銀行伍佰圓手繪未採納設計稿三組中之第一組。正面以棕、藍雙色呈現：左為銀行徽章，中上及右上分別標示銀行名稱，右側則設獅形水印區域。背面通體湛藍，描繪滙豐銅獅側影，遙望維多利亞港景緻。配色沿用前版基調，或為延續視覺慣性、賦予穩妥信賴之感。此稿核心設計元素雖見於最終發行版本，然未獲選用，概因防偽特徵不足，且銀行名稱字體尺寸相對侷促。至1970年代初，"昃臣"伍佰圓已流通逾35年，銀行有感須革新圖案、尺寸與防偽技術，以順應時代。當時五百圓仍具強大購買力，故甄選替代設計尤需審慎；此亦解釋為何"昃臣"伍佰圓與"老鼠斑"伍佰圓之間，竟存在1969至1973年長達四載之空窗。據推測，此過渡期間產出大量初期構思素材，包含後續兩批將呈現之藝術家手繪稿。每件皆為孤品，為鈔票設計與印製的前期階段，提供引人入勝的窺探視窗。
