HOW TO GET RID OF THE UHLANS How to get rid of the Uhlans. (An effective remedy.) Large caricature of the 1870 war depicting a Prussian cavalryman fleeing at a gallop from figures disguised as francs-tireurs. Below the illustration, a long caption ironically provides the “recipe” for putting the Uhlans to flight: “Dress up mannequins as francs-tireurs; station them on the outskirts of towns and villages…” Signed THÉO in the stone. Black lithograph, printed by Desjardin in Orléans, circa 1870. A fine example of the patriotic and anti-Prussian imagery circulated during the war. Some foxing and soiling, minor signs of wear; an old pencil annotation in the upper right corner.
