Icon of Christ Pantocrator. Tempera and gold on wood. Set in a vermeil oklad of 84 zolotniks (875 thousandths) with repoussé and chiseled decoration; the halo is in polychrome cloisonné enamel (with some missing pieces and imperfections). Moscow, 1899–1908. Goldsmith: KHLEBNIKOV, marked with the eagle of the Imperial Court Purveyor and the engraved inventory number “X31.” In its wooden kiot (lid and glass missing) Dimensions: 27 x 23 cm - Gross weight: 2,500 g. History: This precious icon of Christ Pantocrator, created especially for a special occasion by the renowned Moscow silversmith Ivan Khlebnikov, is a particularly remarkable example of tempera painting from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Saviour’s expressive and mystical face is rendered using the “otborka” technique, characterized by very fine brushstrokes, employed in the prestigious icon workshops of Vasily Guryanov, Mikhail Dikairev, Yakov Iepanitchnikov, and Vasily Chitov. Christ is clad in shades of orange and green, enhanced by a subtle layer of brilliant gold, in delicate harmony with the gilded, radiating frame adorned with scrollwork. The understated color palette is expressively accentuated by the superb cloisonné enamel halo, highlighted by a border of tricolor flowers and a predominantly turquoise background.
