Timo Sarpaneva – Iittala – Arktia – set of 2 solid glass candlesticks – about 1989/1990 Special vintage set of two Arktia candlesticks, designed by the internationally renowned Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) for the Finnish glass manufacturer Iittala. The Arktia series dates to the late 1980s, with the design dated around 1989. This set consists of two different sizes that together form a particularly beautiful and sculptural ensemble. The candlesticks are made of thick, solid clear art glass with a characteristic elliptical shape. In the transparent glass there is a beautiful blue inlay, combined with air bubbles that have been incorporated as decorative elements in the glass. Due to the heavy glass thickness, a strong optical effect arises: depending on the viewing angle the blue shape appears to shift and the light is refracted in different ways. At the top, both candlesticks feature a deep, rounded indentation for a candle. Even without candles, they are attractive sculptural glass objects and fine examples of Finnish glass design for which both Sarpaneva and Iittala are internationally known. The large candlestick measures H 19.5 × L 7.5 × W 5.1 cm and the small one H 13 × L 7.5 × W 5.1 cm. Together the two candlesticks weigh no less than 2525 grams, consistent with the very solid construction. Both pieces are in nice, undamaged vintage condition.
