IMPORTANT TAPESTRY: "NOBLE IN CEREMONIAL ATTIRE," 19th CENTURY Wool tapestry in the style of the Royal Windsor Manufactory, featuring the typical color palette of the Victorian era, with ochre, gold, and blue hues that are highly characteristic of the dyes used in the late 19th century to imitate medieval pieces. The tapestry’s subject echoes the works of Herbert Bone, who created designs that served as guides for the weavers. A coat of arms appears in the upper left corner, reminiscent of the “House of Grimaldi.” The presence of the “Monaco” coat of arms on this tapestry can be explained by the history and business model of the Royal Windsor Tapestry Manufactory (1876–1890). Dimensions: approx. 282 x 395 cm. In its current condition, small areas are unstitched, and there are signs of moisture. The Windsor manufactory, operating under the high patronage of the British royal family (Queen Victoria and her son Prince Leopold), worked exclusively for the high nobility, European royal families, and wealthy collectors of the Victorian era. It was customary for the workshops to use an existing artist’s sketch and, upon request, incorporate the buyer’s coat of arms in a corner to personalize the work.
