Indus Valley - Mother goddess statuette - fertility idol...

IDOL FIGURINE OF THE INDUS VALLEY Typical female figure from the Indus Valley, with abstract aesthetics, representing a fertility goddess. Seated, she displays drawn legs and generous hips. Her slim waist stretches to an opulent chest, supported by bent, sketching arms. Her rounded shoulders frame a set of finely worked necklaces. Her stylized face, evoking a bird, features a beaked, tongue-shaped nose, hollowed round eyes, and is without a mouth. It is concealed beneath an elaborate veil, adorned with relief pierced discs and tiny dots. Bird-faced figurines like this are found throughout the region. Although their meaning remains obscure, most female figures unearthed by archaeologists—predominantly male—at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century were immediately labeled as “fertility idols.” More recent interpretations, however, suggest that these figures likely held a much more nuanced and varied symbolism.
