(Plexiglas 100 UV Gallery Anti-reflex) Poster measuring 35.3 cm x 27.4 cm in excellent condition by Magnum photographer Inge Morath Title: A Lama at Times Square, New York City, USA, 1957 Inge Morath Austrian/American, 1923–2002 Inge Morath was born in 1923 in Graz, Austria. After studying languages in Berlin, she initially worked as a translator, then as a journalist and Austrian editor for Heute, a publication of the Information Service Branch based in Munich. Throughout her life Morath kept a diligent travel diary and wrote letters, possessing a rare gift for words and images for her colleagues. As a friend of photographer Ernst Haas, she wrote captions for his photographs and was invited by Robert Capa and Haas to Paris to work as an editor for the newly founded Magnum agency. In 1951 she began photographing in London and assisted Henri Cartier-Bresson as a researcher in 1953–54. After two years of work as a photographer she became a Magnum member in 1955. In the following years Morath traveled extensively through Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Her particular interest in art found expression in photo essays published in a number of leading magazines. After marrying the playwright Arthur Miller in 1962, Morath settled in New York and Connecticut. In 1965 she visited the USSR for the first time; in 1972 she learned Mandarin and obtained a visa for China, where she undertook her first of many trips in 1978. Morath felt at home everywhere. Among her most important works are portraits of passersby and celebrities. She was also a skilled photographer of places: her images of Boris Pasternak’s house, Pushkin’s library, Chekhov’s house, Mao Zedong’s bedroom, artist studios and cemetery monuments are permeated by the spirit of unseen people who are still present. Inge Morath died on January 30, 2002 in New York City. MAGNUM PHOTOS Thames & Hudson Dimensions (Poster): 35.3 cm x 27.4 cm
