Javier Zanetti is an Argentine former footballer. He played as a right back or center back and spent almost his entire career with Inter Milan of Italy's Serie A. He is the third-most capped player in the history of the Argentine national team (behind Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi) and the most capped Argentine player in professional football. Since June 30, 2014, he has served as vice president of Inter Milan, a Serie A club where he is regarded as one of the greatest idols in the club’s history. Zanetti played as an Inter player from 1995 until his retirement, taking the captain’s armband on August 29, 1999. Known for his versatility, he is adept with both left and right, having played on both flanks as a defender and as a winger. He fits easily into several midfield positions, especially as a defensive midfielder. Known as "Pupi" in Argentina, Zanetti was born in Buenos Aires, taking the nickname "El Tractor" shortly after moving to Italy, where his strength, athleticism, stamina, and ability to join the attack earned him reverence. Toward the end of his career, he mainly played in the right midfield. He ended a four-year scoring drought when he netted on November 5, 2006. For Argentina, he played as a right back, and he is capable of switching between defense and attack with ease. Zanetti won five Serie A titles with Inter Milan (all consecutively from 2006 to 2010), after earning the nickname “Il Capitano” (The Captain) among fans and the press since he took the captaincy at Inter Milan. From the 2011-12 season, he was the first non-Italian captain of a Serie A team. He holds the record for appearances by a non-Italian-born player for an Italian club, and his 834 official appearances for the club placed him first on Inter Milan’s all-time appearances list. Zanetti, who retired with Inter Milan, is also known for his charitable work, running a foundation that helps underprivileged children in Argentina. He has been named ambassador of SOS Children’s Villages, a FIFA-linked project in Argentina, and in 2005 he received the Ambrogino d’Oro, awarded yearly in Milan, for his work with the PUPI foundation. Zanetti is also a global ambassador for Special Olympics. On May 22, 2010, it was Zanetti’s 700th appearance for Inter, precisely on the day of the UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich, and Inter’s 2-0 victory secured the treble (Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League in the same year), rounding off a historic year. On October 20, 2010, he scored against Tottenham Hotspur to become the oldest player to score in the Champions League at 37 years and 71 days. That record has since been surpassed by Filippo Inzaghi and Ryan Giggs. He played for the Argentina national team starting in 1994. With his national team, he won the gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games and the silver medal in Atlanta 1996. Since October 2007, Zanetti has been the player with the most caps for the national team, surpassing Roberto Ayala. With the national team, he played in 2 World Cups, 2 Confederations Cups, and 5 Copa Américas. He was included in the FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living footballers, compiled by Pelé at the request of FIFA. He wears shirt number 4 retired in recognition of his career at Inter Milan (1995-2014).
