Italian school (XX) - Ritratto - Papa Pio XII

Important portrait of Pope Pius XII - Vatican Oil painting on silk of papal subject, the Supreme Pontiff “REVERENDISSIMA, EMINENTISSIMA and ECCELLENTISSIMA SANTITÀ,” with cherubs holding a cartouche and an antique wooden frame datable to the eighteenth century. Of notable iconographic and collector interest, this composition depicts the pontiff in ceremonial dress, with a cardinal mozzetta in a deep purple-red, light borders, and the papal cap. The face, outlined in profile, features thin glasses, a high forehead, and marked facial features, elements that recall traditional pontifical portraiture. The figure emerges from a neutral background, with a lively yet concise painterly rendering that concentrates attention on the identity of the subject and the rich chromaticity of the vestments. At the bottom, an ornamental arrangement develops with two winged putti supporting a scroll, giving the composition a celebratory character and a suggestive ecclesiastical taste. The work is housed within an antique wooden frame with a textured surface and a lived-in patina, whose presence significantly contributes to the historical and antiquarian character of the whole. The artifact presents itself as a figurative testimony to the tradition of papal portraiture, particularly interesting for collections dedicated to Church history, memory of the popes, and ecclesiastical art and devotional objects.
