Italy, Pavia. Henry IV (1056-1105 AD). Denaro (No reserve price)

Italy, Pavia. Henry IV (1056-1105 AD). Denaro (Silver, 16 mm, 1.08 g). Obv: + AVGVSTVS CL. H / RIC / N in three lines. Rev: + INPERATOR. PA / PIA in two lines. Reference: MIR 837; Fusconi 28/A. Henry IV ruled during the Investiture Controversy, a struggle with the papacy over the appointment of bishops. Excommunicated by Gregory VII, he sought absolution at Canossa in 1077. Renewed conflict led him to support a rival pope, Clement III, who crowned him emperor in 1084. Pavia’s mint issued silver denari in his name, reflecting imperial authority in northern Italy. His son’s rebellion forced his abdication in 1105.
