J. Simon (XVIII) - Nobildonna

59 BRGSNLRNZ 926 BO Splendid and fascinating antique mezzotint engraving from the 18th century, depicting the English noblewoman Frances Worsley, Lady Carteret (1694–1743), wife of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville. The portrait, of exceptional formal elegance, shows the noblewoman seated in a natural setting (landscape with trees), with a draped dress typical of the Baroque/Flemish era and a book in her hands. At the bottom bears the formal printed inscription: "The Right Honourable the Lady Carteret". Author Charles D'Agar (1669–1723), renowned portrait painter of the English nobility. Attributed to the workshop of John Faber the Younger (or John Simon), masters of the mezzotint technique in 18th‑century London. The mezzotint technique on applied paper. The technique is renowned for the softness of the chiaroscuro transitions and the depth of the blacks. The print is presented within an important antique carved wooden frame with a rich geometric motif of concentric circles (baccellatura) along the entire perimeter. The original period gold passe-partout frames the work, giving it great luminosity and visual prominence. The frame is solid and shows splendid original wear. Measurements: cm 40 x 47; inner cm 31 x 38 x 2.5; Weight 1.3 kg
