Expressionist oil painting on paper by Belgian artist Jack Godderis, titled “Marine”, depicting a harbour scene with fishing boats, figures on the quay and a dynamic, colourful sky in shades of blue, white and ochre. Signed and dated ’46 in the upper right corner. Godderis was born in 1916 in Penarth, Wales, to West Flemish parents and died in 1971 in Berchem. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Albert Thijs and at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Albert Saverys. In 1945, he was a co-founder of the artists’ group Jeune Peinture Belge, from which he withdrew after several months due to dissatisfaction with its move towards abstract art. His work is associated with Post-Expressionism in the Flemish tradition, with Constant Permeke, Frits Van den Berghe and Gustave De Smet among his main influences.
