Alla auktioner / Diverse / Jan Metsys (1510-1575), Workshop of - Grablegung Christi
Accompanied by a statement from Larry Silver, dated 30 June 2012, in which he attributes the painting offered here to the workshop of Jan Metsys. Also included is an assessment from the Art Loss Register; each document is provided in copy. In a tabernacle frame, its lower border suggests the presence of the open sarcophagus. The body of Christ is held above the open sarcophagus, by John and Joseph of Arimathæa; behind him Mary laments. The background is formed by a hilly to rugged rocky landscape. A comparable, albeit mirrored, Entombment scene by Quentin Metsys (1466–1530) is held in the Diocesan Museum in Gaeta. A composition of the same format is kept in the Leuven Museum. Provenance: Private collection, Hanover. Literature: Cf. Leontine Buinsters-Smets, Jan Massys, Zwolle 1995. Cf. Cécile Scailliérez, Quentin Metsys Sainte Madeleine, Paris 2007. Cf.
