Jane Austen. English School, early 19th century - Elms in Goodnestone Park the Seat of Sir Brook Bridges Bart, June 1st 1805, titled and dated, pen-and-ink, with some pencil outline, 22.5 x 30cm, unframed Jane Austen (1775-1817) mentions Goodnestone more than thirty times in her extant letters, and unsurprisingly, as she was both a frequent guest at the country house and often walked through its park - the female author's brother Edward Austen Knight (1767-1852) having married Elizabeth Bridges (1773-1808), a daughter of the house, resided first at Rowling House, Goodnestone, and finally nearby at Godmersham Park, Kent. Following Edward & Elizabeth's marriage in 1791, Jane became a regular guest, staying with her brother and sister-in-law, as well as the Bridges baronets themselves at Goodnestone Park, where, in 1796, she began to writer her first novel, 'Pride and Prejudice', originally named 'First Impressions'. The present sheet, by an anonymous contemporary Regency hand, offers a glimpse into a picturesque landscape Jane Austen would have known, walked through, and taken inspiration from. One could romanticise at its sylvan literary associations ("Are the shades of Pemberley to be thus polluted?"), but we do know that following the death of her father Jane, along with her mother and sister Cassandra, left their lodgings in Bath in early June 1805, and travelled to Goodnestone and Godmersham, via Steventon - collecting Anna en route, and would thus have seen the elms in the parkland at Goodnestone exactly so. Poignantly, it was during this very same summer visit that the Rev. Brook Edward Bridges (1779-1825), Elizabeth Austen Knight's (née Bridges) brother and the perpetual curate at Goodnestone, is believed to have paid his unsuccessful courtship to Jane, who forever remained Miss Austen.
