One of the most beautiful and lovely photographs in my private collection by the well-known photographer Jane Evelyn Atwood, highly sought after by collectors. This photograph is part of the iconic and acclaimed photographic essay "Women in Prison" (Mujeres en prisión) by the prestigious American photographer Jane Evelyn Atwood. Maison d'arrêt de femmes de Dijon (France), 1991, taken by Jane Evelyn Atwood. Between 1989 and 1990, Atwood became the first photographer to gain full, unrestricted access to women’s prisons in France, a historical documentary project about reality, isolation, and human dignity behind bars. Jane Evelyn Atwood (New York, 1947) is a renowned American photographer based in Paris since 1971. Her work stands out for deep, long-term documentary projects focused on marginalized communities and people on the margins or excluded from society. Throughout her career she has received prestigious international awards, including the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography (1980)—precisely obtained thanks to her series on children and blind people—, the Oskar Barnack Award, the Grand Prix Paris Match for Photojournalism, and the Lucie Award for Documentary Photography, in addition to being named Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. Her work is part of institutional collections and galleries of international prominence. Throughout her international career Jane Evelyn Atwood has been honored with the most prestigious awards and recognitions in photojournalism and documentary photography. W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography (1980): She was the first photographer to receive this prestigious humanistic award, propelled precisely by her project on children and blind people. Grand Prix Paris Match du Photojournalisme (1990): Awarded for her striking report on women’s prisons. Ernst Haas Award (1994): International recognition of her visual and narrative excellence. Leica Oskar Barnack Prize (1997): Granted for her profound and extended documentary work in women’s prisons. Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography (1998): Award given in the United States for her mastery in photo reporting. Grand Prix Photo Albert Khan (2018): Recognition of her career and contribution to humanist photography in Paris. Lucie Award for Documentary Photography (2018): Distinction awarded in New York for her vital contribution to the documentary genre. Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (2023): Appointment by the French Ministry of Culture (Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) in recognition of her cultural contribution.
