Japanese Samurai Warrior Okimono Sculpture with Dynamic...

"Okimono" - Warrior- Late 20th Century — This lot features a Japanese Okimono of notable craftsmanship, depicting a samurai warrior in a dynamic and authoritative pose. Crafted in the second half of the 20th century, the sculpture captures the essence of the bushi (warrior) figure with meticulous attention to the details of armor and equipment. The work stands on an integrated base that simulates rocky terrain, lending stability and scenic coherence to the composition. The samurai is captured in a moment of command or inspection. The stance is assured, with one leg slightly forward and the body in a slight twist that heightens dynamism. In the right hand he raises a war fan (gunbai), a symbol of high rank and used by commanders to issue orders on the battlefield. The facial expression is focused and stern, rendered with great realism beneath a finely decorated kabuto (helmet). The sculpture’s strength lies in the exceptionally detailed rendering of the armor (yoroi). Every element is carved with precision: from shoulder protections (sode) to the lacquered torso and arm scales, down to the suneate greaves and the haidate thigh guards. The surfaces display varied textures that mimic original materials, such as lacquered metal, leather, and fabric, creating a tactile and visual impact. Even the floral decorative motifs on the greaves are clearly visible and attest to a high level of artisanal skill. The statue is made of a heavy composite material, giving it a solid and massive presence. The finish is a dark anthracite gray, with a matte patina that evokes the look of ancient bronze or volcanic stone. This sober color choice helps focus attention on the complexity of the form and the richness of the carved details, without distractions. Subtle tonal variations and signs of wear, visible in some areas, add character and authenticity to the object. Okimono (literally “object to be placed”) are ornamental Japanese sculptures that became popular starting in the Meiji period. Born to be displayed in homes, often in a dedicated alcove (tokonoma), they depict scenes of daily life, mythological figures, or, as in this case, heroes and warriors of tradition. This specimen embodies the spirit of Bushido, the samurai code of honor, and represents a tribute to classic Japanese iconography. For its artistic and symbolic value, this Okimono qualifies as a piece of great collectible interest and as a sophisticated furnishing element. It is an object capable of dialoguing with both classical interiors, such as a study or library, and contemporary settings, to which it adds a note of history and exotic culture. An artwork that is not merely decoration, but a narrative fragment that tells of the strength and elegance of feudal Japan, ideal for enriching a Wunderkammer or a collection dedicated to East Asian art."
