First edition of the important mathematical compendium by the Jesuit and professor at the University of Trnava, Joannes Baptista Horváth, here complete with the two volumes and kept in a single contemporary binding. The work constitutes one of the main mathematical manuals published in Trnava in the 18th century. A modern history of the university’s scientific production regards it as one of the most significant mathematical works in the local academic milieu, covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry and analytic geometry. Binding and condition Contemporary 18th-century full leather binding, spine with raised bands with a leather label and title stamped in gold HORVATH – ELEMENTA MATHESEOS. Covers with simple blind tooling. The binding shows evident but coherent signs of use: abrasions and scuffing to the leather, wear to edges and corners, more wear to the headcaps and lower end of the spine, with small tears and superficial losses. The structure nevertheless remains substantially cohesive. Internals generally well preserved. 18th-century strong paper, with browning and scattered foxing, more evident on some leaves. Old signatures and handwritten ownership notes are present, an interesting element for the provenance of the copy.
