1985, finely crafted black lacquered cherry cabinet with seven graduated drawers, tall angular panel legs, signed and dated to interior bottom of case. 69.75 x 17.5 x 12 in. Collection of Sydney and Frances Lewis, Richmond, Virginia John Eric Byers is an artist, designer, and craftsman who painstakingly hand-tools wood to create geometrically inspired pieces that are minimal, emotional and modernly refined. A former student of Wendell Castle, John's work is guided by a purity in form, surface texture, repetition, and respect for use of materials. Heralded as a leading American artist working in wood, permanent collections include The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) and The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Numerous awards include The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, The New York Foundation of The Arts Awards and inclusion in The Smithsonian's Archives of American Arts. This modern and simplistic design utilizes fine craftsmanship with tight dovetailed drawers and solid wood secondary. Overall good condition with scuffs and areas of touch up including lower left leg panel and upper left rear corner.
