Jordi Nuñez Segura (1933-2023) - Retrato de Dama

Title: Portrait of a Lady School: Catalan School of the 20th Century Author: Jordi Núñez Segura (1932-2023) Style: Figurative, with post-impressionist and expressionist influences Technique: Oil on panel Circle and artistic influences: The work is part of the Catalan figurative tradition of the second half of the 20th century. The free brushwork, the modeling through color, and the contained expressivity of the face show affinities with post-impressionism and with the more lyrical branch of European expressionism. The psychological treatment of the model also connects with modern intimate portraiture. Female half-body portrait in which the subject appears slightly reclined, with the head tilted and a serene, introspective gaze directed at the viewer. Her blonde hair, loosely gathered and adorned with small vegetal elements, frames a face developed through delicate transitions of ochres, pinks, violets, and pearly tones. The lady wears a light garment with a wide neckline and rests on a reddish backrest, whose intense chromaticism contrasts with the dark, neutral background. The artist concentrates greater definition in the eyes and features, while the hair, clothing, and surroundings are resolved with a more gestural and impasted brushstroke. The result combines elegance, naturalness, and notable psychological depth. The work is signed by the author in the lower right corner. Biography of the author: Jordi Núñez Segura, also catalogued as Jorge Núñez Segura, was a Catalan painter, draftsman, and illustrator whose production focused especially on seascapes, ports, landscapes, and figurative scenes. The Maritime Museum of Barcelona preserves several of his naval-themed works, such as Vaixell escola Juan Sebastián de Elcano and El Santa Eulàlia. The portraiture as a genre was less common in his output, a circumstance that adds particular interest to this work. It is presented with a wide gold-finished frame and textured surface, complemented by black inner profiles and light tones. The frame enhances the painting’s warm palette and lends the whole a classical and elegant presence. Notes: According to the provided information, this is one of the few portraits made by the artist.
